Snow & flowers

Terelj, Mongolia
Saturday, May 12, 2012

We made it out to Terelj today despite some very weird weather conditions--and there we found many more signs of spring--amidst the patches of snow.

Azaleas!

And what are these lovely yellow flowers?

Tiny signs of spring

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
Saturday, May 5, 2012

It was a blistering 28C/82F today, but still, signs of spring are few and far between. With no spring rains yet, the hills above UB remain brown and tired. But as we played in the garden at a friends' place today, the girls found tiny signs of spring...

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
Saturday, June 18, 2011

Summer's here at last, and it's picnic time in the hills outside Ulaanbaatar. The hills are lush and green and the flowers amazing!

Spring flowers at last

North of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
Sunday, May 22, 2011

Finally I saw my first spring flowers today on a drive we took north of Ulaanbaatar. Things are still barely green here but, at last, a flower!

Flowering forest

Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia
Sunday, June 13, 2010

This morning we took a drive with friends along the south side of the Tuul river up to the old observatory east of Ulaanbaatar. After dropping the picnic stuff under a tree, we walked up into the forest to a rocky outcrop with a stunning view of UB. There were larch trees, birch trees, and flowers carpeting the green forest floor.

Glorious.

I think we are finally seeing the "upside" of that long, cold winter!
